The work is rooted in hospitality and placemaking with diverse projects that include large mixed-use developments, adaptive reuse projects, public realm design, architectural branding, single family homes, hotels, restaurants, workspaces, and bespoke furniture design. The firm advocates a simple, edited design palette, using creative materials and techniques to create unexpected results. MHOA was formed with the goal of producing locally engaged, design-driven architecture and interiors that unite people through design. He is also a Past President of AIA Austin, which honored his firm as its 2016 Firm of the Year. Hsu is a member of the University of Texas School of Architecture’s Advisory Council. Following graduation from the UT Austin School of Architecture, Hsu worked at OMA in the Netherlands before returning to Austin where he has practiced since 1998. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and Wendell is also a laureate of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Projects include custom residences located in Arizona and nationally, public commissions including the Palo Verde Library/Maryvale Community Center, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix, and the Scottsdale Teen Center, and resorts/spas worldwide including the much-acclaimed Amangiri Resort. Burnette’s work has been featured in over 150 publications worldwide, and has received many prestigious awards, including a P/A Design award from Architecture magazine, three “Record House” awards from Architectural Record magazine, and a National AIA Honor Award.
Wendell Burnette, FAIA, is an award-winning architect whose projects reflect many of the same key values as the late Frank Welch: space and light, context and place, organic materials that are carefully crafted, and respect for the environment and landscapes in which we live.
